Home Office commits to publish report on spiking

Following our legal challenge against the Home Office, the government has committed to publishing their long overdue report on spiking this Autumn.

The Home Office was due to publish the report by 28th April 2023 as part of a legal obligation under Section 71 of the Crime, Police, and Sentencing Act 2022, outlining the nature and prevalence of drink spiking and government plans to tackle the issue. However, this failed to materialise.

We teamed up with our friends at the Good Law Project to challenge the government’s failure to publish the report in April. Our threat of legal action forced the Government to respond and they have now committed to producing the report this Autumn.

Whilst we are pleased that our threat of legal action has reminded the Home Office of their statutory obligations and meant that they’ve recommitted to producing this report. It is worth remembering that the government has already broken promises to publish by a particular date.

We will be keeping pressure on the Home Office and have asked them to specify a date in the Autumn for the planned publication. If they fail to deliver again, we will consider further legal action.
